The urine of a mature North American Beaver and the European Beaveralso contains ‘Castoreum’ which is the yellowish secretion of their castor sac. Beavers use it during scent marking of their territory, but humans have some surprising uses for it.
Castoreum is approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of United States as a food additive. Mostly referenced as “natural flavoring” in the ingredient list, it is commonly used as vanilla flavoring.
Castoreum is also used in perfume making, in medicines, as raspberry flavoring and it also contributes to the flavor and odor of cigarettes.
